Housing Law

What is it?Housing Law provides free and confidential legal advice in regards to public housing and tenancy issues. Some examples of problems we can help you with are:

  • Difficulties applying for housing
  • Repairs and maintenance
  • Rent arrears/behind on rent
  • Housing transfers
  • Evictions
  • Housing debts

Who is eligible?Anyone living in the ACT who is a tenant in public or community housing. We can also provide advice to tenants in private rentals who are on a low income.

Social Security Law

What is it?
Social Security Law provides free and confidential legal advice about Centrelink.
Examples of problems we can help you with include:

  • Appealing Centrelink decisions
  • Overpayments/underpayments
  • Entitlements
  • Debt recovery
  • Payments cut off, reduced, cancelled and suspended
  • Claims refused

Who is eligible?
Anyone who lives in the ACT or in south-east NSW

Night Time Legal Advice Service

What is it?
Night Time Legal Advice Service (NTLAS) is a service of Canberra Community Law providing information, referral or one-off legal advice in most areas of law. NTLAS runs each Tuesday evening from 6pm to 8pm (except December and January) each year.
Some examples of problems NTLAS can help you with are:

  • Fines and other traffic infringements
  • Minor criminal law offences
  • Family law
  • Employment law
  • Debts
  • Complaints
  • Consumer issues

Who is eligible?
Anyone who lives in the ACT

Who runs it?
A solicitor is employed to supervise NTLAS, but otherwise the service is provided by a committed group of volunteer solicitors.

How do I apply?
NTLAS operates on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 8pm (from February to November each year).

Doors open at 6pm and you must arrive or ring in by 7pm to be assisted on the night.

DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION LAW

What is it?
Disability Discrimination Law provides free, independent and confidential legal assistance in disability discrimination law for people living in the ACT.

Who is eligible?
Anyone who has a disability and has been treated unfavourably because of the disability.

Anyone who is associated with a person with a disability (such as a carer, friend or family) who has been treated unfairly because of that association.

Anyone who is a carer, friend or family member of a child or a person with a disability who has been treated unfavourably because of the disability and who requires supported or substituted decision-making.

STREET LAW

What is it?

Street Law is a generalist law outreach service. It assists people who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless by providing a free legal service and by connecting clients with other services. Street Law provides free and confidential legal advice and assistance.

Who is eligible?

Street Law will assist people who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless by providing a legal service and by connecting clients with other services. The service is free.

A person is homeless or at risk of homelessness if they do not have adequate access to safe and secure housing. This includes situations where the person’s housing:

  • damages, or is likely to damage their health
  • is unsafe
  • fails to provide adequate amenities
  • fails to provide the supports that a home normally affords
  • is not affordable.
